Mid-Century Menu Monday For February 21 to 27

Vintage image of a family about to sit down to a family meal. Mother brings juice to the table, Father settles toddler daughter into a high chair, and school-age son slides down the banister to reach the table faster. The table is neatly and prettily set with mid-century modern linens and china. Teal house bird logo of Mid-Century Modern Mommy is in the lower left corner.

Lots of comfort food, and 3 stick-to-your-ribs, home-cooked square meals a day. Honestly, one of my favorite things about winter in a cold climate is the food! Vintage menus, cozy vintage tablescapes, and making sure that the whole family is comfortable and fed — no wonder serving your family 3 square meals a day is one on the most important tasks for a 1950s housewife. Here’s your mid-century menus for the end of winter.

Lunch

On Saturdays, the children do their chores and then play outside all day. (Yes, I do insist on old-fashioned Saturdays, so we don’t homeschool on Saturdays, and they are each responsible for their own rooms, which they clean thoroughly every Saturday.) So, on Saturdays, we do a “diner lunch” or a picnic lunch, something fun. In winter, it is almost always a diner lunch.

  • Hamburgers
  • Potato chips
  • Milk shakes

Dinner

Since Saturday is an outdoorsy day, we usually have an “after-skiing”-type menu for dinner. The teenagers get a movie night with vintage teenage snacks after the little ones go to bed.
